These instructions are for your comfort and safety. It is important to follow them carefully so that your surgery is not cancelled at the last minute.

Should you develop a cold, fever, or other illness before the day of the surgery, or should you be unable to keep your surgery appointment for any reason, please call your physician immediately so that you may be rescheduled or further evaluated. The Surgery Center will call you the afternoon prior to surgery to confirm the time. Do not eat or drink anything (not even coffee, tea, milk, or water) after midnight the evening before surgery. Do not chew gum or suck on hard candy, lifesavers or breath mints after midnight the night before your surgery. This is important to prevent vomiting during surgery which could have serious consequences for you. (Similarly, take no medication unless so instructed; certain heart, blood pressure and diabetic medications may need to be continued - check with your Doctor.)

If you are going to have general anesthesia or are going to receive any sedative medications in the Center, you must have a responsible adult to drive and escort you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. Wear loose fitting, casual clothing. Button shirts are best if having any type of upper extremity surgery and drawstring pants are ideal. Do not wear nail polish, jewelry, hairspray or perfume. Bring your insurance cards, but leave all other valuables at home. Please bring a case for eyeglasses or contact lens, so they can be stored during your operation. Denture cups will be provided when necessary. If the patient is a child, please bring a favorite toy or blanket on the day of surgery. Rarely, a patient may require admission to a hospital for further care. Should this event occur, the Center will work with your surgeon to arrange for safe transfer to the hospital.
